Concrete is a versatile construction material known for its durability. That doesn't mean it's impervious to damage, however. Your patio, driveway, or foundation can develop cracks over time, highlighting the need for exceptional
concrete work. Here are a few ways to prevent damage and extend life span.
After it's poured, concrete usually takes about 28 days to fully cure. This allows time for chemical processes to fortify the material and protect it from damage. Slow water evaporation is key in the curing process, which is why it's often recommended that you spray the surface a few times every day during the first week. If temperatures are high, consider watering the concrete more frequently.
When doing concrete work, the quality of the base plays a key role in the quality of the surface, and compaction ensures the necessary support. Once the soil under the area where the slab will be installed is excavated, the next step is to fill the space with special gravel. The gravel must then be compacted into a 4-inch layer to form a stable base.
Control joints are intentional weak spots used to mitigate the natural shrinkage and soil movement that can affect the stability of slabs. There are a few methods for installing joints, including using a concrete blade or inserting wood joint strips. Proper spacing of joints protects against cracks and is dependent on the size of the slab.
